Ralph is an experienced forensic accounting expert specialising in personal injury and clinical negligence claims and business interruption and subrogated claims.
Ralph joined Tempest in April 2016, having previously worked at Grant Thornton for 31 years. He has acted as an expert witness since 1996.
Ralph has acted as an expert or adviser in several hundred cases, from advice on a particular aspect such as pension losses through to acting as expert on very high value losses.
For personal injury claims Ralph has reported on cases relating to a broad range of trades and professions, from plumbers through to consultant surgeons. He is well versed in public sector remuneration structures. His work has also included cases where claimants were entrepreneurs in various industries.
Ralph acted on a number of the Buncefield explosion subrogated recovery claims, several product recall claims in the food and beverage sector, and on many manufacturing claims where the operator has suffered a catastrophic event.
Ralph’s experience also includes leading a team on assignment to the United Nations Compensation Commission, two SFO assignments and giving evidence to the Conduct Committee of the Financial Reporting Council following an investigation.

Examples of Experience
- Acted as the expert investigating a major business interruption claim (£25m) following a catastrophic fire at a heavy industry facility, including advising on repair or replace decisions.
- Acted as expert for the insurer of an insurance broker in a claim it faced for negligence (inadequate cover) following a fire at its client’s premises.
- Acted as expert in a subrogated recovery claim for insurers relating to a product recall (food industry) due to faulty packaging.
- Considerable experience in all aspects of personal injury expert reporting and advice, having acted in several hundred cases. These include:
- Loss of earnings claims for employed and self-employed individuals, normally those who have suffered catastrophic life changing injuries, considering:
- complex employee remuneration and benefit packages
- pension losses
- periodical payments
- fatal accident claims
- Miscarriages of justice claims (assisting the expert advising the independent assessor for 12 years) for some of the leading miscarriage cases and dealing with novel issues, including:
- interest on long periods of loss
- saved living expenses resulting from incarceration
- Assisting the expert in considering challenges to the rate of return applied to future losses in personal injury damages
